Smoking has long been associated with long term life-threatening side effects such as lung cancer, coronary heart disease, stroke, damaged blood vessels, respiratory tract infections, and what have you.   1. Propylene Glycol (PG)


Used mainly in asthma inhalers or albuterol, PG is safe to inhale when vaporized. It is a thin liquid that carries flavors well. The most common side effect of vaping is related to the use of PG as a major ingredient for e-juice. In most cases, however, people who develop certain health conditions following inhalation of PG-based e-juice are actually allergic to it. Allergic reactions may include sore throat, headaches, sinus problems, nausea, numbness, or cramping.


Once absorbed by the body, PG is metabolized into lactic acid. It is the same organic compound that accumulates in the muscles during strenuous workouts. Human body prefers to generate energy through aerobic methods, in which oxygen is required to break down glucose for energy. Some circumstances – such as evading The Terminator or marathon training – require faster production of energy than the body can deliver oxygen. Your muscles adapt and generate energy through anaerobic method instead. After only few minutes, anaerobic results in lactic acid buildup in the muscles. Under this condition, you may experience cramping and fatigue.


Both symptoms are normal and in fact parts of natural defense mechanism by the body to prevent constant muscle contraction. Your body needs to slow down, so you can take many deep breaths and deliver more oxygen. Aerobic energy production can start again and cease the anaerobic mode. PG inhalation stimulates lactic acid buildup, but the problem will go away after many minutes of resting. It is not dangerous and you can prevent the same issue from happening again by staying hydrated. It is also possible to increase lactate threshold by having regular exercise. In other words, PG is only dangerous if you are allergic to it or you have underlying lactic acid issues such as from hypothyroidism.


  1. Vegetable Glycerin (VG)


Glycerin is categorized under GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) substances by the FDA. Many (if not most) e-juice makers use certified organic vegetable glycerin. It is used widely by food industries as sugar replacement (sweetener). Although it has lower Glycemic index than sucrose, it metabolizes like carbohydrate which means it is transformed into sugar. Sudden increase in blood sugar, albeit small, is expected. People with diabetes may find vegetable glycerin unacceptable; the same thing applies to hypothyroidism condition. To avoid the issue by using low/zero VG e-juices.


  1. Flavorings


There are hundreds of flavors available, and they are all made from food-grade natural or artificial flavorings. By food-grade, it means the ingredients are safe for consumption; they are the same things found in food products. Similar to previous ingredients mentioned, you will only have problems with flavorings if you are allergic to them. Some people are allergic to artificial flavorings, so they can use e-juice with natural flavorings instead. Allergic reactions may include skin rashes, runny nose, shortness of breath, coughing, and red eyes. You can eliminate the issue by choosing more tolerable flavors. Everybody is different so a process of elimination is probably necessary before you can find the right e-juice.

E-juice manufacturers use pharmaceutical-grade nicotine. There is always amount of impurities that cause addiction, but at least this is the safest form available. If you want to completely avoid nicotine inhalation, you can choose an e-juice that does not contain the substance at all. Most vapers would demand high level of nicotine when they first started to use vaporizers or during the transition from traditional cigarettes to vaporizers. As they become more experienced, they need less nicotine to be satisfied. A vaporizer that produces massive amount of clouds (vapors) give the same relieving effects as traditional cigarettes do.




All in all, vaping does not have any dangerous side effects. In cases where users develop allergic reactions, the symptoms last for short-term only and will go away with simple treatments. None of the allergic reactions are dangerous or life-threatening, as long as you are well-prepared. Zero-nicotine e-juices are also available; you can even gradually decrease the amount of nicotine to get rid of the addiction. If necessary, consult physician to figure out if you have any allergies beforehand.
